Top ten ice cream flavours

From the van hatch: the ten flavours that never fail, and what each one actually does for you.

Serving from a hatch for years teaches you something about flavours — mainly that the classics are classics for a reason. Here are ten that never fail.

  • Vanilla — not boring, foundational. Everything else is measured against it, and a good vanilla carries a 99 entirely on its own.
  • Chocolate — the safest crowd-pleaser on the van and the one children point at without reading anything.
  • Strawberry — the summer flavour. Lighter than the other two and the one adults come back for.
  • Mint choc chip — divisive and proud of it. The people who love it order nothing else.
  • Raspberry ripple — the sauce is the point. It is what makes an ordinary cone look like a treat.
  • Honeycomb — sweet, crunchy and the one people describe as tasting like a holiday.
  • Cookies and cream — texture doing the heavy lifting. Reliably the teenagers’ pick.
  • Salted caramel — the newest arrival on this list and now firmly established.
  • Banana — quietly one of the most requested, particularly by anyone over sixty.
  • Rum and raisin — an old-school flavour that has been out of fashion for thirty years and still sells every time.

The traditional 99 with a flake is still the single most ordered thing on the van, by a distance. Everything else is a variation on it.
