A day at the All American Car Show
Kilbeggan, blue skies and a very long queue — how the van got on at the Midland American Auto Club show.
On Sunday 21 April 2024 the van was out at the All American Car, Truck and Bike Show in Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath, run by the Midland American Auto Club. Clear skies the whole day, which for an outdoor event in April in Ireland is close to a miracle.
The crowd
Bigger than expected, and the right mix — car enthusiasts who had come for the day with families in tow. That is the ideal crowd for a van, because people are already settled in for hours rather than passing through.
How it went
Steady from the moment the show opened until it wound down. The 99s went fastest, as always, with slush a close second once the afternoon warmed up. The van in purple and gold sitting among a field of American classics did not look out of place at all.
Worth doing again
Car shows have turned into one of our better summer days out. Long hours, a settled crowd and everyone in good form. We will be back.
What we learned
- Slush outsells everything once the temperature gets past about 18°C — worth loading heavier than you think.
- Park where the crowd naturally slows down, not at the entrance. People buy on the way round, not on the way in.
- A full day at a show is closer to six hours of continuous serving than the 30 to 45 minutes of a private booking, so it is a different job entirely.
